Poverty Palaver! Nursing Mother Jailed for Stealing Indomie

For stealing a cartoon of Indomie to feed herself and her baby, a 28 year-old nursing mother, Ms. Taye Joseph, has been sentenced by an Osogbo Senior Magistrate Court to Seven Days in Ataoja Police Station, from where she would be going to clean the court's premises every morning.
During the trial which attracted a lot of sympathy from those present,...
Ms. Taye pleaded guilty to all the charges read to her, which includes house-breaking and stealing, and thus begged for leniency.
The police prosecutor, Solomon Oladele, told the court that the woman committed the offences on November 16 at Olugun area of Osogbo, adding that her action contravened sections 516, 383, 413 and 390, of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State. He added that Ms. Taye forcefully entered the shop of one Fasilat Yinusa and stole a carton of Indomie valued at N1,200.
In his ruling, Senior Magistrate Olusola Aluko said: "Throughout the trial period, I watched the convict keenly as she wept which indicated that she is regretting her action and I noticed that she is very sober. She is to be kept in the custody of the Ataoja Police Station from where she should be coming to clean the premises of this court for seven days."
He, however, gave the convict an option of N300 fine for each of the seven-count charges brought against her, making a total of N2,100.
Due to her poor financial state, from what I gathered, it is unlikely Ms. Taye will be able to raise the N2,100 fine in order to escape the punishment which could affect her baby's health. Poverty is really causing a lot of problems for the poor in this country. Such a sad case.
