In the last three weeks Rivers State's capital and its environs have been in the news for the wrong reasons. Daylight robbery and killings have suddenly become a fad among angry youths in the city and I hear many more youths are being recruited into the dangerous trade because, according to some, the government have failed to serve the masses.
The robbers are carrying out their deadly activities in the day time in order to...
openly register their displeasure with the way politicians are treating the rest of the people, a source revealed. Now to the latest robbery and killing: Eight corpses were evacuated from an armed robbery scene at Rukpokwu, on the outskirt of Port Harcourt on Friday, even as an undisclosed amount of money was carted away from a targeted bullion van.
While six of the corpses were policemen on the escort of the bullion van that was robbed, one was believed to be a member of the robbery gang and the last a passerby hit by stray bullets. Eyewitness account have it that the daredevils crossed the bullion van conveying money for one of the new generation banks at about 5:30pm and immediately opened fire on the convoy.
After killing the escorts of the fund and an innocent passerby, the armed bandits went for their targeted loot in the bullion van and took same away unchallenged. The amount involved is yet to be known as at the time of posting... Who will save Port Harcourt residents from this dangerous part? I hope the state government will find an answer to this challenge.
